The RSV vaccine helps protect against respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).
RSV is a common cause of coughs and colds. Most people get it several times during their life.
It usually gets better by itself, but in some people (especially babies and older adults) it can cause illnesses such as: Pneumonia (a lung infection)
These illnesses can cause serious breathing problems. They may need to be treated in hospital and can be life-threatening.
Getting RSV can also make your symptoms worse if you have a lung condition, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD)
The RSV vaccine helps reduce the risk of serious breathing problems like pneumonia and bronchiolitis.
The virus tends to have a seasonal transmission pattern with peak transmissions occurring during the winter months like influenza. RSV spreads rapidly between humans and is not found in any other animal.
Current estimates for older adults suggest that there are approximately 1200 deaths per year in patients between 45 and 75 years of age and 4000 deaths in those over 75.
Many people are disappointed that because they are over 80 they are not being given the vaccine. Many individuals, between 60 and 75 who feel they are vulnerable because of existing health conditions are also disappointed.
The NHS RSV vaccination is only available free on the NHS for to the 75-79 year old age group. If you are in the the 75-80 age group we strongly recommend you get it from your GP.
Most people over 60 can have the RSV vaccine. You only cannot have the vaccine if you've had a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose of the vaccine or an ingredient in the vaccine.
If you are age 60 or older, the RSV vaccine is available from our pharmacy to protect you from RSV. Talk to one of our pharmacists to see if it’s right for you. Unfortunately, we can only provide it as a non-NHS service.
It is available from Revel Pharmacy Now. Unfortunately it is one of the more expensive vaccines. Our price is £195 or £375 for a couple. Having searched we think our price is very favourable in comparison.
The vaccine is ordered in on an individual basis and because of the cost we ask for a deposit. You can make an appointment at the pharmacy or call us if that is more convenient.
